Sew Soft, Cushioned Slippers for Kids (Custom Fit Guide)
Dear Readers and Subscribers,
Children outgrow slippers quickly, and store-bought pairs often lack the comfort and durability we want for growing feet. Sewing children’s slippers is a practical, economical project — and they make wonderful handmade gifts.
Today we’re sewing soft, fully lined children’s slippers with gently cushioned soles and 3/8" elastic around the top to help them stay securely on active little feet.
These slippers are flexible, breathable, and comfortable for everyday wear around the house.

Soft & Cushioned Sole Construction
The sole is layered for comfort while remaining flexible and safe for little feet.
Recommended Sole Layers (Bottom to Top)
Outer sole fabric (sturdy cotton or canvas)
One layer of cotton batting
Optional fleece layer for warmth
Sole lining (cotton knit or soft cotton)
For toddlers and younger children, keep the sole lightweight and flexible.
For older children, you may add an additional batting layer for extra cushioning.
For slippery floors, add:
Suede patches
Grip fabric
Non-slip sole material
Safety is especially important for children.
How to Size Children’s Slippers
Children’s feet grow quickly, so custom tracing is best.
Trace the Child’s Foot (Most Accurate)
Step 1: Place paper on the floor.
Step 2: Have the child stand on the paper wearing socks if they will wear socks with the slippers.
Step 3: Trace around the foot while they are standing.
Standing ensures accurate sizing because the foot spreads under weight.
Step 4: Add ¼" at the toe for growing room.
Step 5: Add ½" all around for seam allowance.
This becomes your sole pattern.
General Children’s Size Reference (Optional)
Approximate finished sole lengths before seam allowance:
Toddler (US 5–6): 5½"–6"
Toddler (US 7–8): 6½"
Little Kid (US 9–10): 7"
Little Kid (US 11–12): 7½"
Youth (US 13–1): 8"
Youth (US 2–3): 8½"
Always verify by tracing when possible.
Drafting the Upper
After completing the sole pattern:
Measure across the widest part of the sole (without seam allowance).
Multiply that number by 2.
Add ½" ease.
Choose coverage height:
• 2"–2½" for toddlers
• 2½"–3" for older children
Add ½" seam allowance and 1" at the top for a 3/8" elastic casing.
The elastic helps keep slippers on busy little feet.
Cutting Instructions
Cut:
2 outer soles
2 sole linings
2 batting layers (plus fleece if using)
2 upper outer pieces
2 upper lining pieces
Remember to mirror pieces if using directional prints.
Construction Overview
Layer sole pieces:
Outer sole → batting (and fleece if desired) → sole lining.
Quilt lightly if desired.
Sew upper outer pieces at the toe seam.
Sew upper lining pieces.
Create an elastic casing at the top.
Insert 3/8" elastic and adjust gently.
With right sides together, attach the upper to the sole.
Stitch carefully around curves.
Clip curves and turn right side out.
The finished slipper should feel soft, flexible, and secure.
